Hardwired or battery-only: what’s the difference?
Battery-only alarms are cheaper and legal in some older homes. Here is what you get with each.
| 240 V hardwired Sune standard | Battery-only | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Mains power, with a backup battery | Sealed battery only |
| Homes that already have hardwired alarms | ✓ Correct replacement | ✗ QFD says replace with the type the home was built with |
| New homes and approved renovations | ✓ Required by law | ✗ Not allowed |
| Link between alarms | Wired, so no radio pairing to drop out | Radio (wireless) |
| Who installs | Licensed electrician only | Anyone, including DIY |
| Upfront price | Higher | Lower |
